An Honest Pain Map, Zone by Zone

Nobody faints over an arm tattoo. Ribs are a different story. Here is what hurts and how much, without the drama and without the sales pitch.

It hurts, but it is a strange kind of pain — closer to a constant scratch than to a jab. What really changes the experience isn't your pain threshold, it's where you put it. Here is the map as we see it every week on the bench.

Easy zones

Outer forearm, upper arm, calf and thigh. There is muscle and fat between the needle and the bone, so two or three hours are perfectly doable. Most people getting their first tattoo walk out saying they expected worse.

Middle ground

Shoulder, upper back, outer calf and inner forearm. It nags and it wears you down after ninety minutes, but it stays manageable. The upper back has a bad reputation it does not deserve — the trouble starts as you move down toward the spine.

Zones that genuinely sting

Ribs, sternum, elbow, knee, top of the foot, fingers, neck and inner bicep. There the bone sits right under the skin and the vibration goes straight through. Not impossible, but we work in shorter runs with more breaks. If this is your first tattoo, do not start here.

What you can actually control

Eat a proper meal an hour before and sleep well the night before: nine out of ten wobbles we see are blood sugar, not pain. No alcohol, no hangover. Skip aspirin and ibuprofen the day before — they make you bleed more; paracetamol is fine. And ask for a break whenever you need one. We are not in a hurry.
